Kids birthday parties can be expensive and many shop bought decorations just don’t quite cut it. So let me show you 5 fast birthday garland hacks from straws that you can customise to fit any party theme while saving money.

The 5 fast birthday garlands that I’m going to show you can be made from whatever straws you have in the house and can be reused any time you need a quick and stylish party decoration or want to pretty up your garden for guests.

If you are new to the blog, welcome aboard! You will see that I like to keep my DIY’s simple by using low cost materials and equipment that you already have at home. I also try to keep my party budget under control by saving money wherever I can without cutting back on style. We still want that wow factor, right?

If you’ve got kids in the house, then you’re likely to have a cupboard full of drinking straws. And while we’re all trying to avoid buying the plastic versions, what do you do with the ones you already have? Biodegradable paper is a better straw choice for the environment but if you’re feeling guilty about your old stash of plastic ones, why not turn them into a reusable birthday garland?

Equipment needed for the 5 fast birthday garland hacks

I’ve used a combination of paper and old plastic straws and both look fab. I will say that the fatter variety are much easier to string together, so bear this in mind if you want a super-fast DIY.

Now depending on which garland hack you choose, you will need some or all of the bits and bobs below. I’m a massive fan of using what you have lying around the house and I tend to keep hold of old gift bags, cards and pretty packaging. I’ve used some of my hoard to make the paper flowers for one of my garlands but any coloured or patterned card you have will look fab.

  • Drinking straws
  • Scissors
  • Yellow paper
  • Beads – anything sized between 15mm – 25mm
  • Cute gift bag or card
  • 2″ paper punch – I used a flower but a circle cutter would also work
  • Ruler
  • Glue – hot glue gun or white glue
  • Pretty string or twine
